Doh! You don't have to be Homer to lose your data. It happens! We're here to help.
Usually, data loss occurs when a portable drive is removed from the computer prematurely, as in when it is writing a file.
It is best to use the "Safely Remove Device" feature on your PC. It ensures that the drive isn't busy and it is ready to be removed.
You can also lose data if your portable device's batteries die while writing a file such as taking a picture.
This can corrupt the file system of the storage card, making the other files inaccessible.
The "delete" key can also cause problems if you don't have your trash bin enabled, which would allow you to recover your files from it.
Whichever way you lost your files, fret not. We can recover your files in most instances (physical damage to the drive much less likely).
